Trash CanThere’s nothing to buy here. Let me say that right away. Instead, what this post offers you is just old-school advice, free for the taking.

This isn’t about spam or email, either. I’m talking about the real deal, the stuff that the postal carrier brings you and goes straight to the trash can.

You may not know what you want (which is why you read this site!), but you know what you don’t want: crap, credit card offers (you’ll apply online), or a catalog (you’ll buy online).

So how do you make it stop?

  • Stop pre-screened credit card offers (which is virtually all of the ones that come in the mail) by visiting It’s backed by the major credit bureaus (meaning it’s a legit service) and will take you off those lists for 5 years, pronto.

  • Stop other direct mail offers by visiting the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Mail Preference Service page and specifying your name and address be excluded from DMA member prospect lists.

Getting your name and address off the DMA member prospect lists might stop the influx of some catalogs, but not necessarily all of them. If you actually ordered a product from a company in the past and signed up to receive their solicitations, you’ll probably still get them.

To take care of those, register at Catalog Choice, then when a catalog arrives that you don’t want anymore, just punch the details into your account there and Catalog Choice will take care of getting you off that mailer’s list. It’s easier than going to the trouble of calling J. Crew and telling them you’ll never buy their ridiculously overpriced cardigans, anyway.

All it takes is five minutes of your time.
